Hey, Bulldog!' Beatles Fans Show Animals Love

Fundraiser to benefit local Humane Society

By STACY SMITH SEGOVIA

Lovers of The Beatles and lovers of animals are, all-in-all, a shiny, happy crew. Saturday, the two groups come together for the second Sgt. Pepper's Pet Sounds concert.

The Nashville-based Beatles Fans Meetup Group sponsors the fundraiser, with donations and money from a silent auction of donated Beatles memorabilia going to the Humane Society of Clarksville-Montgomery County.

"We're always pleased when people join in to help the animals," says Elaine Weil, director of the local Humane Society. "We get so much from the animals, it's a pleasure to return the favor."

Last year, Ben Wilson entertained the crowd at Ice House Cafe with songs by the Beatles that mention animals. The event, organized by Clarksville's own Joe Kraeske, raised more than $1,000 for the Humane Society.

"Being an animal lover and advocate for many years, I thought it was a great idea and told Joe (Kraeske) that the Beatles Fans Group would be happy to help," says Vicki Williams, organizer of the Beatles Group. "Almost all of our members have pets, so this was an opportunity to help lost, abandoned, abused and neglected dogs and cats. Who could say no?"

This year's entertainment begins with karaoke by Alex Adames at 1 p.m., followed by The Geezers from Hopkinsville, Ky., violinist J. Mooneyhan and Randy Finchum from Nashville. Not yet finalized at press time, either Shane Miller or Chris Robertson, or both, will perform 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday, followed by The NonProfessionals, who close out the event performing 6 to 7 p.m.

"There will be live music, karaoke, contests, door prizes and a silent auction," Williams says. "We are hoping to end the day with even more donations to the Humane Society than we collected last year."

Original Beatles-themed artwork is among the items for bid in the silent auction. Because Ice House Cafe allows smoking, the venue is open only to people 21 and older.

"The Ice House has great sandwiches and drinks, so get some folks together for an hour or two on Saturday afternoon to raise money for homeless animals in our community," says an e-mail message from the Humane Society.

Karaoke master Alex Adames, a member of the Beatles Fan Meetup Group and owner of a dachshund, says he plans to be at the benefit all day.

"If you're an animal lover, come on out to support that, plus meet new people," Adames says. "It's all about meeting people and remembering the animals people have and don't take care of. It's a reminder, really."

Whassup with that? First of all, you only have to be 18 to legally smoke (not that any of us waited that long, or cared). Plus, children frequent many places where smoking is the norm: restaurant/bars, outdoor concerts, certain airlines, etc. This whole absurd ETS scam has about run its course, and let's hope we can get back to some sanity in public policy. If you want this crap. move to California.

After all, smoking rates have stabilized since 2003 at about 23% of the population, and that's WAY too large a minority to be treated as though they have no rights. Are you politicians listening?

HINT: Could the 21 rule have to do with the place serving ALCOHOL, perhaps? Let's keep our politically incorrect substances to be shunned straight here, shall we?
